Bankstown, which was established in 1797 by Governor Hunter in honour of Sir Joseph Banks, is today one of the largest Local Government Areas in New South Wales, with approximately 180,000 residents speaking more than 60 different languages.

We are a leading, innovative and successful council, responsible for the planning and management of the City of Bankstown.

Bankstown City Council is one of the largest of the 177 councils in NSW. Overseeing a city that is 76.82 square kilometres in size and home to approximately 170,000 people, we provide over 100 services and $877 million worth of community assets. We pride ourselves on being a city of progress and are committed to remaining a leader in local government.

Local government responsibilities include:

  • social services, such as home nursing, immunisation centres, meals on wheels
  • information services, such as libraries
  • leisure & recreation facilities, such as pools, playing fields, leisure centres
  • waste removal
  • road maintenance and streetscapes
  • protecting the environment, both the building environment and the natural environment
  • Community health
